Life is challenging! We will face many roadblocks, but what do you do to overcome your emotional pain? What do you do to push forward and live a fulfilled and happy life? What is the true definition of happiness?

True happiness is an inner quality. If your mind is at peace, you are happy. If your mind is at peace, but you don’t have much else in life, you can still be happy. If you have everything in the world -material goods, power — but lack peace of mind, you can never be happy. Material goods are a temporary fix and it does not provide the ultimate fulfillment we need to be happy. Studies have shown that even billionaires are not significantly happier than others.
So how do you gain inner peace?
An excellent way to accomplish inner peace is through giving! Many of us don’t know how powerful it is to give! Studies have shown that… Drum roll… The key to happiness is giving!
More does not equal happier! When giving a chemical is triggered in your mind that releases multiple positive hormones. Because of our ancestors, we are hardwired to share in order to survive. We are designed to live together and support each other in order to build communities. This includes support through daily necessities, food, water, shelter, sharing knowledge…
When you give to others you will receive the same happiness hormone that you experience when you love someone. That warm and cozy feeling that you wish would never end! I have great news for you! This hormone/feeling can last hours or even days.
When you give to others this is what happens. You produce more oxytocin and dopamine, being kind can also increase serotonin, a neurotransmitter that helps regulate your mood. These hormones are so incredibly important in order to provide ultimate happiness. Being kind and giving to others is a strong support system in order to treat pain and depression.
Take a moment today. Maybe when everyone else is asleep and you have time for yourself:
- Think about what will bring you inner peace.
- Pray and ask for guidance.
- Think about the different ways you can give to others.
- Don’t forget to acknowledge what you are grateful for. What are the positive factors in your life?
