Did you ever hear the term, “did you wake up on the wrong side of the bed?” Well, there is a lot more to that! They say the first 20 minutes of our day will decipher how the rest of the day with either fall apart or come together.
For those of you out there that do not have a morning routine, let me tell you, it is so important!
You want to be as efficient as possible right? I know, so do I. If we do not focus on what our bodies need first thing in the morning we are depriving ourselves of the happiness and fulfillment we could be experiencing each and every day! We could be missing out on a lot!
I want to live my best life, don't you?
Through practice, I have compiled 5 simple steps so that you can start your day on your best foot. It works for me and I am sure it will work for you. But remember, you know you best! A morning routine is all about listening to your needs and doing what is best for you. I hope these tips will inspire some ideas and a new healthy practice that will make you smile each day!
- The first 3 seconds count
That annoying alarm goes off and all you want to do is press snooze. But remember an extra 30 minutes in the morning can make the world of a difference and you know it! After that alarm goes off it takes 3 seconds for your mind to decide if you want to get up or not. We need to be mindful of this and understand what choice we want to make ahead of time.
What is your “why”!
Why do you want to wake up? Plan something in the morning that you will look forward to. Something that makes you happy. Wake up a bit earlier to go running, or read the newspaper. You are making time for yourself. Mornings are supposed to be peaceful and the most fulfilling time of your day!
Getting up in the morning can be really hard so try to get to sleep on time and following these tips can give you the push you need to a great start!
2. Express gratitude
As we are scrambling to get out the door in the morning we usually bypass the important practice of expressing gratitude and giving yourself time to reflect.
Life can get hectic and stressful and it can be so easy to forget about the many things we should be grateful for. Before you know it, by the end of the week we start to feel grumpy and we feel like the world is crashing down on us! Get off that bumpy road and realize life gave you so much!
Make it a routine to say 3 things you are grateful for each morning.
Stop feeling tired all the time because there is so much to be alive for!
3. Hugs make a difference
Hug your kid, a spouse, or a pet! Hugs can go a long way! Believe it or not when you hug something magical happens. Your body releases something called oxytocin (the love hormone) and serotonin (the happiness hormone), this will strengthen your immune system, your self-esteem, lower your blood pressure, balance your nervous system, and release tension.
A good old hug can change your world in so many ways!
4. Now flex
Okay, maybe your arms (depending on your goal) but definitely flex your brain, because it's a muscle too! Exercise in the morning is a vital practice in support of mental clarity. It supports blood flow, which provides more oxygen to your brain and it promotes support for the growth of brain cells.
Running, yoga, swimming… pick a form of exercise that you enjoy and experience the benefits!
5. Refreshing cold water can do wonders
We are naturally dehydrated in the morning so having a glass of water first thing in the morning will not only hydrate you, but it will also improve brain function by increasing blood flow and releasing oxygen to the brain. This will improve your memory and balance your mood.
Splash your face with it and have a refreshing shower. You will step out of that shower feeling like a ray of sunshine!
Create a routine that works best for you. Making this happen for 1 or 2 days is easy, but it is only when you are consistent that you will experience the many benefits. Make it a challenge! Try this with a friend and see who can make it through a whole month. After a month it will definitely stick with you!
Let’s strive each day to be the best version of ourselves that we can be!
