Listening…. like REALLY listening to someone is an amazing skill to have! And trust me it isn’t always easy to do!
The best way to learn, build relationships and grow as a person is by being a good listener. There are so many benefits to listening and you can master that skill just by reading this blog! Really!
Here are a few tips so that you can ACE the skill of listening!
When you are talking to someone stop thinking about what you will make for dinner, or what Mary said to you that day… Stay focused, stay present, and make sure all of your attention is on the conversation.
You may think the person you are speaking with can not tell that your eyes are drifting to the side and you hope your response makes sense. Trust me they can tell!
Ask questions and lots of it! Doing this will show that you are fully engaged in the conversation… well because you are! You may think that you know what will be said next, but never assume. The best way to learn anything is by asking questions. You would be surprised by the responses you receive. No matter how much you already know there is always more to discover!
Even if you disagree with what the other person is saying make it a point to stop and hear them out! You could be surprised and they might have a good point that you never thought of! By hearing their side of the story it will also give you more insight when trying to emphasize a different perspective.
You get home from work and your partner wants to tell you about their day. They had an amazing lunch and they want to tell you all about it! The last thing you want to do is interrupt them and start talking about your lunch. I am sure it was great but your spouse is clearly excited to share their experience with you. Embrace that and wait for your chance to talk. Don’t burst their bubble! Let them enjoy the moment!
It isn’t a competition it is a conversation! A conversation goes both ways. It should be enjoyable for whoever is involved and it isn’t one-sided. Be patient throughout the conversation and allow the person speaking to have the chance to properly express their thoughts. Make sure it is a shared conversation and everyone can walk away feeling accepted and understood.
Remember a good listener is hard to come by, but when accomplishing this skill the benefits are substantial. Relationships will blossom, you will learn a lot, and who knows you could even get promoted! Follow these steps today and watch your life transform!
